The Rt Hon Andy Burnham MP
Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport
Andy Burnham was made Culture, Media and Sport Secretary in January 2008. Andy served as Chief Secretary to the Treasury from June 2007, as part of Gordon Brown's first Cabinet. He was previously Minister of State for Quality and Patient Safety at the Department of Health. Before this, Mr Burnham was Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Home Office for Immigration, Citizenship and Nationality from 2005 to 2006. He has also been Parliamentary Private Secretary to the former Home Secretary, David Blunkett (2003-2004) and was a member of the Health Select Committee from 2001 to 2003. Other previous roles include Administrator for the Football Task Force and Special Adviser to Chris Smith at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Before being elected to Parliament in June 2001, Mr Burnham worked as a researcher for Tessa Jowell MP and at the NHS Confederation. He was educated in Merseyside and gained an MA in English at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. Away from work, Andy is an avid supporter of Everton Football Club and Leigh Centurions Rugby League Club.
