Wheelchair Ramps : When does a slope become a ramp

I am often asked about gradients of wheelchair ramps and in particular when handrails are required or not required.

The simple answer is, if you can create a gradient no steeper than 1:20 it isn’t technically classed as a ramp but as a slope, and you can have a slope of 1:20 up to a maximum height of 500mm before incorporating intermittent level landing and passing areas.

Any steeper than 1:20 and that slope then becomes a ramp which technically requires handrails up-stands and non slip surfaces.

Please Note: The above applies when having to comply with building regulations, and are recommended guidelines. Please ensure you receive expert advice before acting on this information.

Wine Coolers for storing red and white wine

I revamped a section of the wine coolers site over the weekend and redirected an old outdated version to a new section about Tastvin wine coolers.

This is one of those tricky little projects because the key phrase Wine Coolers can relate to such a wide range of products.

Someone looking for a wine cooler may be looking for a very simple product for keeping a single bottle of wine cool for just a few pounds, may be looking for a wine fridge for the kitchen for low hundreds pounds, may be looking for a fancy display cabinet for high hundreds pounds, may be looking for a proper wine storage unite for keeping wine cool and at optimum conditions for low thousands of pounds or may even be looking for a walk in wine cellar for high thousands of pounds.

With all this in mind it makes PPC  particularly tricky, the owner doesn’t want to pay for clicks when the visitor is only looking for cheap wine coolers but still wants to always appear for the main phrases like wine coolers and wine cabinets.

Using WordPress to Build a Website

I’ve been playing around with WordPress to create very simple 10 page websites.

Example wordpress websites can be found on my DB107 Marketing Consultants site and a little site I created for Wood Floors and More

Basically, what I do is remove all the blog like characteristics, links to author, links to categories, links to comments, etc. I set up a search widget and a text widget, add 1 page which is used as the static homepage, then create 10 posts which are used as pages.

I then edit the footer and header to hard code the navigation structure to the 10 pages created.

Wine Preserver for opened bottles of wine

I’ve been working on a little website for a company that supplies wine preservers for opened bottles of wine.

The product is called the Autovac Wine Preserver and it increases the length of time an opened bottle of wine stays fresh by extracting the air from the bottle and maintaining a vacuum pressure.

The AutoVac Wine Preserver keeps opened wine bottles fresh for up to 10 days.

WordPress security problem in the twentyten theme

Having just done an update to WordPress 3.0.2 it has (for the first time I can remember) messed up an adapted theme.

Can we assume from this, that the security issue was actually within the twentyten theme.

Quick heads up to anyone who just makes minor adaptation of themes without renaming them, make sure you rename your theme before updating.

How to rank high in google local listings

Google maps, google local business centre, google places have been abused by webmasters and SEO’s from day one.

To combat this google have strict guidelines about using exact business information with local listings as the business uses offline.

i.e. Business names should appear how they do offline (no adding extra keywords), physical addresses should be used, same telephone numbers should be used, main URL’s should be used.

Ultimately Google are trying to ensure only genuine businesses with local physical addresses are listed on google maps.

Where as local listings were cmpletely seperate from the main SERP’s (Search Engine Results Pages) the new system is combining the 2

What the combination means is it is now more important to gain citations to rank high in google local listings, effectively it encourages webmasters to display the same information wherever they appear online.

Not only is this a good thing, as it builds up trust, it could also actively discourage anchor text manipulation, as it could now be seen as more important to use either the business name or the URL as the anchor text.

So what are our tips to rank high in google local listings

Ensure you display your contact details on your websites, use the same business name and telephone number, ask other people to use your business name or URL as anchor text when linking back to you, add your correct details to business directories, basically, ensure tou build up strong footprints using the same details so as to help google recognise you.

This is just one reason why the UK Small Business Directory is now using microformat code in an attempt to help improve the google local listings for all who take out upgraded listings. Not only does it help with visitor traffic it can also help with your own google local listings.

TC Narrowboats – Narrowboat For Sale

TC Narrowboats is a little site I set up to advertise a narrowboat for sale.

It’s a very simple 10 page HTML site with a lifgtbox image gallery.

Some of the pages may be a little slow to load as it has some rather large images on them, we had to do this though as the photos are very important.
