Wheelchair Ramps : When does a slope become a ramp

I am often asked about gradients of wheelchair ramps and in particular when handrails are required or not required.

TheĀ simple answer is, if you can create a gradient no steeper than 1:20 it isn’t technically classed as a ramp but as a slope, and you can have a slope of 1:20 up to a maximum height of 500mm before incorporating intermittentĀ level landing and passing areas.

Any steeper than 1:20 and that slope then becomes a ramp which technically requires handrails up-stands and non slip surfaces.

Please Note: The above applies when having to comply with building regulations, and are recommended guidelines. Please ensure you receive expert advice before acting on this information.
