The Rt Hon Hilary Benn

Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

Hilary Benn was appointed Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in June 2007. Prior to that he had been Secretary of State for International Development since 2003. Between May 2002 and May 2003, Mr Benn was the Home Office Minister for Prisons and Probation. He was previously the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for International Development. He has also been Minister of State for International Development and Tony Blair's G8 Africa Personal Representative. Mr Benn was born in 1953 and attended Holland Park Comprehensive School. He received a degree from the University of Sussex in 1974. He served for 20 years on Ealing Borough Council, becoming the youngest ever Chair of the Education Committee and Deputy Leader of the Council.
