My grandfather Mr Jowett started his piano tuning, servicing and sales business in Cleveleys in 1914 after having worked as a tuner/technician for a large piano shop in Huddersfield for many years. He covered Blackpool,Fylde and Over Wyre areas for 30 years and trained my father who worked for him before the second world war. When my father returned to Cleveleys after the war he took over the business and continued working as a tuner/technician until the age of 92. In 1992 I asked my father if he would consider training me and taking me on as an apprentice. He did this and I worked happily with him as an apprentice for three years before he encouraged and helped me to start my own business as he was by this time confident that I would do credit to the name Jowett Pianos. Like my father and grandfather I also restore and sell quality second hand pianos which I do in a small workshop at the back of the house.I take pride in the quality of my work and in my satisfied customers who include private individuals, schools, churches, concert halls, village halls, the Pleasure Beach, the Haffner orchestra, and Lancaster Community Music Centre.I work in the Fylde, Over Wyre, Preston, Lancaster, Garstang, Longridge, Ribchester, Milnthorpe, Carnforth, Morcambe, and Heysham areas and as far north as Crooklands. Most of my work is piano tuning, but I also regulate, repair , retape, replace felts, springs, key coverings, replace broken action parts, adjust dampers, recenter, cure most taps and buzzes, repalce broken strings, repair or adjust pedal mechanisms, cure sticking notes, replace broken castors etc. I buy quality secondhand pinos ie. pianos with no cracks in the soundboard or pin block, no woodworm or other major problems which I couldn''t guarantee to cure. The pianos I buy are usually of a quality well known make and overstrung with an underdamper tape action mechanism. I occasionally take a piano with an overdamper maechanism in part exchange for another piano providing it meets all the other criteria. After buying a piano I start by cleaning it thoroughly inside and out, I then check tapes springs, felts, strings, pins, dampers etc and decide what to replace. This usually involves taking the action to pieces. After doing all the desirable replacements I then regulate the piano ( tighten all screws, set key dip, level keyboard, set key capstains, jack let offs ,check and adjust dampers etc ). I then tune the piano to standard international pitch .I do this even if several tunings are required to achieve it. I then play the piano listening and feeling for any defects which I rectify if found. Then I hope to find a buyer who appreciates the difference my critical buying and hard work serving and tuning has made to the quality of piano they get if they buy from me rather than from a random advert. I also sell piano stools. I don''t do any work on organs, pianolas, or electronic instruments and I am not a pianist, but I can help you find a good piano teacher or organ tuner/technician if you need one. I also don''t undertake french polishing or repairs to piano cases as this type of work is better done by a professional cabinet maker or french polisher.
